What is Lent?

Lent is the season of preparation for the celebration of Easter. The 40-days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, correspond to Jesus’ forty-day retreat in the wilderness when he fasted and prepared himself for his ministry.

During Lent we look at ourselves and the changes of heart and mind that are needed in order for us to celebrate Easter most meaningfully. We do this by looking ahead especially to Easter and Pentecost – to crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Lent is a time when we are to be challenged, both in worship and in classes and small groups, to commitment and growth in Christian faith and life.

Maundy Thursday

April 21 - 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Maundy Thursday is the observance of the Last Supper. “Maundy” means command in reference to Jesus’ instruction to all believers to observe the sacrament of Holy Communion, which he began on this blessed night.

Good Friday

April 22 - 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Good Friday is the observance of Jesus’ crucifixion. “God’s Friday” was man’s Bad Friday of the Crucifixion, which was turned into God’s Friday by the Resurrection.

Secret Church - The Cross

April 22 - 8:00 p.m. - Midnight in The Venue

Easter Sunday Worship

April 24 - 7:00 a.m. sunrise service, 9:00 a.m., 10:10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services. There will be no Sunday School on Easter.

Easter is more than a day. It is the festival of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a season which the early Christians called the Great Fifty Days, beginning with Easter Day and extending through Pentecost on the fiftieth day following.

It commemorates the fifty days that began when Jesus rose from the dead and ended when the disciples received the Holy Spirit and the Christian church was born. This season, already well established by the third century, is like a continuous fifty-day Lord’s Day.

Since ancient times it has been celebrated as the season of God’s creation and new creation, the season of the risen and ever-present Christ, and the season of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the gifts and fruits of the Spirit.
